First thing to know about this park, at least on the Southern Rim, is that the signage around the park is not that great You'll want to start at the Canyon View Information Plaza. There are a few exhibits in the visitor's center, a gift store for your NPS merch, a coffee shop and bike rental. Next head to the Grand Canyon Village. When you are in Grand Canyon Village trying to find the Verkamp Visitor Center is a chore. There are a lot of one way streets and no signs pointing you to the Verkamp Visitor's Center.
As you enter the Grand Canyon Village, keep right like you are going to go behind the El Tovar hotel. The Verkamp visitor's center is right there on the hill.
Also, the Bright Angel trail starts at the Kolb Studio in Grand Canyon village (just a short walk from the visitor's center.)
You can get many large stamps (7 in the Southern Rim areas). I only got 4 - Canyon View Information Plaza, Verkamp's Visitor Center, Historic Holb Studio, and Yavapai Observation Station (in the Geogical building located between the Grand Canyon Village and the Canyon View Information Plaza.
Pets are welcome all around the main areas, but they are not allowed in the buildings or on the trails below the rim. You can have them (leashed) on the rim trail.
