We entered the park from Holbrook, AZ after stopping by Jim Gray's Arizona Petrified Wood Co. If you buy any petrified wood here, keep your receipt handy if you want to go into the park, they are very serious about people taking petrified wood. When you enter the park, they will even give you a form to fill out if you notice anyone attempting to take any.
The Rainbow Forest Visitor center is just a short drive from this entrance. Behind it are many paved paths that you can walk through several petrified remains. This is really the only place to get up close with the petrified trees. From here, you can drive about 20 miles through the park to the other end - the Painted Desert Visitor Center. Just a few miles before you get to it, you'll pass the Painted Desert Inn building that you can walk through.
Both visitor centers offer a special Historic Route 66 stamp as well as the park stamp, The Painted Desert stamp, and the Painted Desert Inn stamp. The Rainbow Museum visitor center also had a special stamp for the Petrified Forest.
